A split air conditioning unit is one that has the two main components separate from each other, with one being inside the building, and the other being outside. A central air conditioning unit is nearly always a split air conditioning unit. There are also air conditioning units called mini split air conditioners. These units operate in a very similar way, but do not use ducts to send the air. These may provide single room air conditioning, or cooling for multiple rooms, and are often called ductless air conditioning units.

How is a Split Air Conditioner Different From Other A/C Units?

A split air conditioner does not require major installation work because it does not require ductwork. Rather, the indoor and outdoor units are connected with a set of electrical wires and tubing. Another benefit of a split air conditioner system is that you can opt for a multi-split system, where you can have more than one indoor unit connected to a single outdoor unit. How does the split air conditioning works?

A copper connection pipe and electrical wiring connects the indoor unit to the outdoor unit of the split air conditioning. Gas refrigerant is pumped from the outdoor condenser coil and compressor through the connection pipe to the indoor unit or units. Cooling capacity is the amount of heat energy removed by the Air conditioner from a space/ product for a given time. It is generally measured in British Thermal Unit (BTU) per hour (BTU/Hr). In SI units it is measured by KJ / Sec= KW.

Co-efficient of Performance (COP) is similar to EER. This shows the energy efficiency of the appliance.

Will the star rating increase the initial cost of ACs?

Which Air conditioner is preferable – Window or Split AC?

Window AC

Comes in the form of a single box. It is easy to fit on a window or wall frame. This costs lesser than Split AC, but is slightly noisier than Split AC. Not much scope for aesthetics – internally and externally for the building.

Split AC

There are two units – one Indoor and the other Outdoor unit – in the Split AC.

This is slightly costlier than Window AC, silent and quiet operation. Copper tubings, electrical cable and the drain pipe need to be connected to the Indoor unit and will need a suitable size hole in the wall. Installation requires more time and additional work, compared to window AC. Excellent aesthetics internally and externally. The Indoor units come in a wide choice of colors and designs for the users to choose from.

Split Air Conditioner Maintenance Checklist

The easiest way to make sure that your home ac maintenance is done correctly is to have it performed regularly by a qualified, professional air conditioning specialist.

• Inspection of coolant levels and pressure
• Calibration of thermostat and check of proper cycle and temperature

Are Split AC Weather Resistant?

Don't worry about the need to cover the outdoor unit during snow or harsh weather conditions. Split air conditioner units are built to endure under such conditions with no problems. In fact, you could ruin the unit if you tried to cover it during snow or rain.

Is single zone Split AC enough to cool down multiple rooms?

A single zone split air conditioner may not be enough to cool down multiple rooms in your home. You may need to buy one that's dual or triple zoned for effective cooling. You'll have to spend more money, but you'll avoid buying a unit that doesn't work for your entire house. Dual zones have two air handlers, and triple zones have three. Ideally, you'll want one handler per room in your home. One alternative is to get a system with enough BTUs to cover many rooms, without regard to the number of air handlers.

How to wire a Split System Thermostat?


Turn off the power to the furnace. If the switch is nearby and easily accessible, use it or turn the power off at the circuit breaker. Always verify that the power is off with a multimeter because switches and circuit breakers can be mislabelled.

Read the thermostat instructions and remove the old thermostat, being very careful not to let the wires fall back into the wall. If the furnace and air conditioning have already been installed and you are only replacing the thermostat, then the wire count should be correct. If this is part of a new appliance installation, check the number of wires running to the thermostat. If the wire count is incorrect, replace the wires with the correct number or hire a professional to do it.

Read the instructions included with the furnace and the wiring diagram that can be found on the inside of the furnace door.

Line the wire colors with the appropriate slots in both the thermostat and the furnace. Typical placement includes the red wire joining with RH with a jumper to the RC. Yellow is connected to Y, green attaches to G and the white wire joins to W. Two-stage heating and cooling requires additional wires and may not have standard colors. A wire will need to be attached to W2 for the second-stage heating and one attached to Y2 for second-stage cooling. Note what color is used and attach the same color to the color-letter combination on the furnace circuit board. A common wire will more than likely be needed and is usually color-coded black. The common wire connects to the C in the furnace and thermostat.

Place the thermostat faceplate back on the thermostat and secure the thermostat to the wall.

Inspect the wiring in the furnace to make sure that no wire can come loose with a little pull and all wires are secured in the correct location. Place the furnace door back on.

Turn on the power and program the thermostat using the instructions that came with the new thermostat.

Principle & Operations of the Split System of Central Air-Conditioning

When the warmer months of summer arrive, use of a central air-conditioning rises. One particular system, called the split system, places an evaporator coil device within the home and a condenser outside.


A split system uses the movement of heat between the two devices to cool a home. Typically, the evaporator coil is placed in a closet area or garage corner, whereas the condenser can be located in a corner of a garden or patio area.


The outdoor unit converts the refrigerant into a hot, highly pressurized gas. As the refrigerant moves from the outside to the inside device, it slowly cools. Once it reaches the indoor evaporator, it expands and distributes its cool air to the household duct work for cooling. At that point, the refrigerant returns to the outside to recirculate again.


The warmer air that enters the indoor evaporator coil also loses its moisture. It condenses on the coil to be drained away, resulting in cool, drier air within the home.

How to Troubleshoot an LG Air Conditioner

A split or ductless AC is a type of air conditioner that does not have ductwork connected to it and that runs very quietly. If a split AC cools the room poorly or not at all, then you may need to fix it by cleaning the intake grille and air filter. If your split AC has an unpleasant odor or leaks water, then you may need to unclog the drain line.


Make sure the LG air conditioner is completely plugged into a functional power outlet if it is not working. Check the household fuse or circuit breaker, and replace or reset it if necessary.

Turn off the air conditioner and wait three minutes if the air conditioner has turned off automatically due to compressor overload. Restore power and press "Reset" on the power cord.

Move furniture, curtains or other items from the area immediately around the air conditioner if it is not cooling as expected. Turn the thermostat to a cooler temperature.

Turn off the air conditioner and open the front access panel if the air conditioner is not operating well. Pull out the filter and clean it with cold water. Dry the filter completely and return it to the air conditioner.

Turn the control dial to "High Fan" or "High Cool" with the thermostat set to "1" or "2" if there is ice developing on the air conditioner.

How to remove water in an LG Air Conditioner?

LG air conditioners are designed to cool individual spaces or rooms and offer an electronic control panel, three cooling speeds, three fan speeds, an automatic on/off timer, washable filter and a remote control for easier access. The air conditioners are sold online or in select home repair or heating and cooling supply stores and come with a warranty. Minor problems with the air conditioner, such as water in the unit, can often be resolved by the owner through some troubleshooting.


Disconnect the power and turn off the LG air conditioner.
Locate the drain cap at the rear, righthand corner of the unit.
Place a container under the drain cap, and open it.
Allow the water to drain out of the base pan. When no more water drains, close the drain cap.
Restore power.

Steps to Clean Condenser Coils?

You will need a few tools before cleaning these coils. Make sure you have a fin comb, soft brush, grass shears, carpenter’s level, pry bar and coil cleaner. These tools will make the whole process simple.

Here is the step by step process:

Remove grasses, weeds or trailing plants that have grown around the condenser. They restrict the air flow through the condenser coil.

Clean the condensor coils with a coil cleaner. Commercial coil cleaners are readily available in the market and are very effective.

Clean the fins with a soft brush to remove collected dirt. Remove the protective grill very carefully to reach the fins of the condenser unit. A tool called a fin comb is used to make the fins straight.

It is very important to make the level of condenser unit horizontal. Check the level of the concrete pad on which the condenser sits with the help of carpenter’s level. If the condenser is not horizontal then make it in level with a pry bar and shims.

After all the above steps, all the parts of the condenser unit that are disturbed from their places for cleaning should be placed in their particular place carefully.

Steps to Clean Evaporator Coils?

Actually, you do not need to clean these coils regularly as you do with condenser coils. These coils are not in direct contact with outside dust. It is enough to clean them once a year.You will need different tools to clean these coils: Make sure you have a screwdriver, stiff brush, a large hand mirror and household bleach.

Steps for cleaning these coils are as follows:

Remove the foil-wrapped insulation that is fixed at the front of plenum. An access plate is situated using several screws behind this insulation. You will need to remove this plate with the help of the screwdriver.

Now, you will be able to see the dust on the evaporator coils. Clean the evaporator coils with a stiff brush. A large hand mirror will help you to see the dust.

There is a tray below the evaporator unit that can also be cleaned with the stiff brush.

If you are unable to reach every part of the coil you can pull the evaporator unit out a little. This will help you to clean properly.

You can put household bleach into the weep holes of the tray to prevent fungus and mold buildup.

The last step is to fix all the parts of the entire unit in their places. Be careful.
